US govt goes into partial shutdown after Senate impasse on wall budget
Hundreds of thousands of US federal employees went on unpaid work or unpaid leave Friday night after the Senate adjourned without approving the $5bn funding for President Donald Trump’s promised Mexican border wall. Without this funding, he refused to sign off on a stopgap spending bill to keep federal agencies open until Feb. 8. The Democrats are just as determined to withhold this funding. The President and lawmakers have delayed their Christmas holiday break to stay in Washington and hammer out a compromise. Until then, the departments of Homeland Security, Transportation, Agriculture, State, and Justice will begin shutting down.
Best thing that could happen to the federal bureaucratic swamp. Grossly obese monster beast desperately needs to be put on a weight reduction diet. Go Trump go! If they shut down the federal welfare systems, there will be no more NEED to build the wall. Save money. Most illegal immigrants come in for the gov’t freebees, many to overthrow the republic, a few seeking to make their new home better. We have laws in place to determine the difference.
* There is NO SUCH THING as a government shut down. *
Unfortunately the government DOESN’T shut down.
It takes 12 bills to fund the various parts of government. 75% of the government has been funded already (back in May).
Of the remaining 25%, about 13% is kept on anyways because they are considered essential (think air traffic controllers). Park rangers and the like, that are non-essential, will get paid – just late, and for staying home and doing nothing. And the vast majority of these agencies are closed anyways for the next week and a half for the Christmas/New Years holiday.
Government shutdown is the biggest nothing-burger. And unfortunately we don’t save any money as a result of it.
