US, India Japan deploy carriers for exercise vs China

The trilateral Exercise Malabar taking place in the Bay of Bengal is the largest in the 25-year series and seen as a show of force against China’s rising military weight in the Asia-Pacific region. All three participants have deployed carriers, the USS Nimitz, India’s Vikramaditya and Japan’s largest warship, the 27,000-tonne helicopter carrier Izumo. The drill focuses on anti-submarine warfare in light of China’s efforts to strengthen relations with coastal nations in the region. According to Indian media, Chinese submarines were spotted this month cruising in the Indian Ocean.
