US lifts most sanctions on Sudan, leaves its terror sponsorship status

Most of the economic and trade sanctions the US imposed on Sudan two decades ago were lifted although Sudan is still listed as a state sponsor of terror. US officials said progress had been made on counterterrorism and human rights issues, but not enough.  President Omar al-Bashir remains wanted by the International Criminal Court for war crimes, and human rights groups oppose the easing of sanctions.
