US military operation said targeted Somali al-Shabab leader

US drones targeted Ahmed Abdi Godane, the head of the Islamist insurgent group al-Shabaab in southern Somalia, a regional governor said, as African leaders met to discuss ways of dealing with the threat posed by Islamist terror to their countries. Goadane was among the high-ranking al-Shabaab officials who were meeting at Dhaytubako, about 300 kilometers southwest of the capital, Mogadishu, when the drones struck late Monday. There is no confirmation that he was killed. The Pentagon reported a military operation against al-Shabaab, without providing further details.
