US Republican Convention opens in Cleveland

The 2016 Republican National Convention opened in Cleveland, Ohio Monday with the main goal of overcoming party divisions and anointing Donald Trump as its nominee in the November presidential election. On day one, his wife Melania, low profile till now, will take the platform as one of the speakers.

The theme on the first day will be “Make America Safe Again.”

The ABC News/Washington Post poll of registered voters released the day before the convention showed Trump closing the gap with his Democratic rival. From June 26, Hillary Clinton dropped 12 points to 47 percent against Trump’s 43 percent. But voters continue to be unhappy with both choices: 58 percent said they dissatisfied with the likely Democratic and Republican presidential nominees.

The occasion opened with a moment of silence in honor of the fallen policemen in Dallas and Baton Rouge and ‘all families who have lost their loved ones.”
