US sanctions top Lebanese politician for corruption

The Trump administration has imposed sanctions on Gebran Bassil, head of the Free Patriotic Movement, a Lebanese Christian party allied to Hizballah. Bassil is also son-in-law of President Michel Aoun. Lebanon has been in turmoil for months, afflicted by mass protests against corrupt government, a devastating blast and the covid pandemic.
