US sanctions two Hizballah parliamentarians

Following new US sanctions on two Hizballah lawmakers in the Lebanese parliament, Secretary of State Mike Pompeo commented on Tuesday that they are “part of the United States’ effort to counter Hizballah’s corrupting influence in Lebanon. We call on our allies to designate Hezbollah in its entirety as a terrorist organization.” Europe distinguishes between Hizballah as a party and Hizballah as a terrorist organization.

The US Treasury named MPs Amin Sherri and Muhammad Hasan Raad in its first blacklisting of Hizballah’s elected lawmakers, saying they misuse their power to manipulate Lebanese institutions to advance the organization’s financial interests and violent activities.
