US Senate acquits President Trump of abuse of power dismisses impeachment

A Senate majority voted on Wednesday to acquit President Donald Trump of abuse of power and obstruction as charged in Impeachment Articles 1 and 2 brought by the House. The vote by roll call was 48 guilty, 52 not guilty for Article 1. A two-thirds majority is required for a conviction. Voting continued on Article 2, namely obstruction of the Congress inquiry and was 47 guilty, 53 not guilty. The accusation of abuse of power stemmed from Trump’s alleged effort to press Ukraine to investigate his election rival Joe Biden and his son Hunter for corruption by withholding military assistance from the Kiev government. Former presidential candidate Mitt Romney broke ranks with the Republican party and voted with the Democrats to convict the president of abuse of power.
