US Senator McCain pays quick, unannounced visit to Syria
Senator John McCain, one of the most outspoken critics of Obama’s non-intervention policy for Syria, visited Syria on the quiet Monday and met with rebel Free Syrian Army chief of staff Gen. Salem Idris.
The rebel chief reportedly asked for weapons to continue the fight against Bashar Assad, a no-fly zone and air strikes on government targets. These are steps the senator has been campaigning for in Washington unavailingly.
Idris also reportedly urged the US to bomb Hizballah forces. News of McCain’s trip to Syria through Turkey coincided with Secretary of State John Kerry’s meeting with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov in Paris.
