US still unsure that Taliban leader was killed in airstrike

Sources in Washington on Sunday declined to confirm reports that Taliban leader Mullah Akhtar Mohammad Mansour was killed in an attack by American aircraft on the Pakistan-Afghanistan border, even though both the Taliban and Afghan intelligence announced that he had been killed in an American attack.
DEBKAfile counterterrorism sources: Even though the attack was carried out against a vehicle that, according to intelligence information, the Taliban leader was supposed to be in, the Americans are remaining cautious. They suspect that that he may actually be alive and that the reports were intended to mislead them into believing that he was killed so they will stop pursuing him. Another possibility is that Mansour was wounded in the airstrike.
