US-Taliban Afghanistan peace talks are delayed

The Afghanistan peace talks between the US and the Taliban scheduled to start Thursday in Doha, Qatar, have been put off after an angry Afghan President Hamid Karzai’s suspended security negotiations with the US. He demanded that the peace process be completely in the hands of his government, instead of its being tagged on at a later stage. Karzai was also incensed by the flag and banner the Taliban hoisted in Doha under the name used when they were in power 12 years ago: Political Office of the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan. DEBKAfile: US sources in Washington said that the Obama administration would hold peace talks with the Taliban nonetheless over Karzai’s objections.
