US-Taliban peace accord signed in Doha on Saturday

The US and Taliban  signed a peace deal on Saturday at 11 hours GMT in Doha, Qatar. The accord, after marathon negotiations, sets the stage for phased US troop withdrawals from Afghanistan, an end to America’s longest war and intra-Afghan talks on the country’s future.  US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo witnessed the signing while Secretary of Defense Mark Esper issued a joint declaration with the government of Afghanistan in Kabul. Diplomats from Afghanistan, the US, India, Pakistan and other UN member states gathered on Saturday morning for the occasion along with Taliban representatives at the Sheraton Hotel in Doha

Calling the deal “a pre-agreement” rather than a “peace deal”, analysts say that real lasting peace depends on the intra-Afghan talks among the parties.
