World leaders intervene to avert resumed fighting in Gaza

US President Barack Obama called Israeli Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu, while President Vladimir Putin talked to Palestinian Mahmoud Abbbas, as the clock ticked towards Wednesday midnight and the expiry of a 72-hour truce in the Gaza conflict. The contents of their conversations were not revealed. The Israeli delegation left Cairo earlier.
