New Israeli police commissioner’s appointment awaits High Court ruling on petition against him

The Ometz association questioned Yaacov Genot’s fitness for the job because of a 13-year old corruption charge of which he was acquitted by the district and high courts. The High Court promises a ruling by Wednesday.
Internal security minister Avi Dichter named Ganot, director of prisons, as next police chief after commissioner Moshe Karadi’s resignation in the wake of a state probe’s findings of negligence and incompetence in the top ranks of the police force in a six-year old case against a crime gang. The minister has used the opportunity to reshuffle the top police command, naming Ganot to the top post and former Jerusalem police chief Micky Levy as his deputy. The new appointments are subject to approval by a civil service committee and the government.
