Obama announces major review of Afghanistan, Pakistan strategy
Flanked by secretaries of state and defense Hillary Clinton and Robert Gates, the US president Barack Obama announced that his administration would pump 4,000 more troops and funds into Afghanistan because “the safety of people around the world is at stake.” New legislation would provide aid for the economies of Pakistan and Afghanistan, more training for Afghan security forces, boosting their number to 210,000 by 2011, and economic, social and government development.
Obama stressed “the terrorists who planned and supported the 9/11 attacks are in Pakistan and Afghanistan” and preparing more attacks on the US. They must not be allowed to seize power in Kabul.
