USS Truman carrier and strike force bound for waters off Syria amid Russian naval buildup
The USS Harry Truman with a strike force of 5 guided missile warships were on their way on Sunday, Nov. 18 to waters off the Syrian coast. They entered the Mediterranean on Friday, Nov. 16, just as the Russian Middle East fleet wound up a series of search and destroy exercises against enemy submarines and warships. They were led by two Russian guided missile frigates Admiral Makarov and Admiral Essen, armed with Kalibr-NK cruise ship-to-shore missiles. Russia air force helicopters took part in the drills. By week’s end, there were 8 Russian warships in the eastern Mediterranean.
Aboard the Truman are 9 squadrons of Carrier Air Wing fighter bombers . Its strike force consists of the Normandy guided missile cruiser and four guided missile destroyers USS Arleigh Burk, USS Forrest Sherman, USS Bulkeley and USS Farragut.
This US-Russian buildup of sea and air forces opposite Syria has accelerated in preparation for two events, DEBKAfile’s military sources report:
- The approaching meeting between Presidents Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin at Buenos Aires on the sidelines of the 26-30 Nov. G20 summit. Since it is assumed in both Washington and Moscow that the Syria issue will be high on the agenda together with the expanding Iranian presence there, both powers are gearing up for a military event that will tilt the standoff one way or the other.
- A possible Israeli air strike against Iranian targets in Syria after a long pause. The Russians may well decide to use their newly-installed S-300 air defense missiles to shoot down an Israel warplane to get even for the downing of their Il-20 on Sept. 17. For Moscow this is still an open book.
If Russia shoots down any US or Israeli aircraft. Its over for them in Syria. That will be all it takes for a massive war and all Russian assets destroyed. Iran, Syria , hamas and Hezbollah will be screaming rockets down on Tel Aviv and causing unbelievable destruction and death. But this will be the last thing they do. They will all die in the horrific war that follows. So, Mr Putin – best to back off and let Israel take care of business… better still GO HOME!

No, you are not thinking things through. If Israel is seen to be unable to defend itself from Russian presence and systems, then its hand is forced. Israel doesn’t act as the US’s “proxy” – It follows the US line because its in its interests to do so. But if the US is unable or doesn’t want to protect it, then it must act quickly and with massive force. Its too small a country; there is nowhere for these people to go if there is a massive rocket and missile attack. Military bases, airfields and other key IDF facilities will be attacked. The muslims are ready and waiting. If Israel is panicked, its highly likely some very powerful weapons will be used while its still capable of using them. This means all Russian assets destroyed – one way or another, simply because it has take them out.

I would expect the US warships would be positioned more to prevent a Russian – Israeli clash than to take sides. The US would prefer that both sides escape unscathed.

ISIS has been all but defeated within Syria except for some very small pockets which even the now well equipped Syria army can deal with………………so there’s no justification for the Soviets (oops———-I meant the Russians) or the Iranians or Hezbollah or the Shiite militia proxies to still be in Syria, unless they have other intentions for the near future.

The time of aircraft carriers may be receding. Still useful for scaring a small country without defences, but in other situations, they may be as much a liability as an asset. Perhaps this assignment is more political than military? S300 is a defensive weapon, btw. Not an attack on a country. A jet was shot down by an older-type missile some months ago.

I agree with you wholeheartedly. There are also some of the most advanced military capabilities to be found in Israel. The world turns to that very small country for military training, medicine and other advancements. Imagine if it was the size of the U.S. or Russia.
Future actions may depend on what is agreed to by Presidents Trump and Putin. Best case is that Russia is given sufficient notice of a pending attack and looks the other way when Israel attacks Iranian and their proxy’s offensive missile sites. They could also agree that it would be in US. Russia, Israel, Saudi Arabia and other Countries strategic interests to keep Iran from having nuclear weapons and ICBMs that could deliver them. A middle case might be Russia not agreeing to stop Syrian or Iranian anti air missile responses, but not directly pull the missile triggers which would pose the risk of shooting down Israel planes and possibly even US planes flying cover. The Syrian/Iranian missile sites then would be neutralized by either Israel, the US or both. Worse case Iran and it’s proxies shoot offensive missiles at Israeli cities, then all bets are off as the responses would not be good for anyone.
Under no circumstances will Russia risk a direct confrontation with the US let alone Israel. For all the talk of the SA300 system, it can be overwhelmed even after it’s so called “advanced linking” has been enabled. If smart enough to pay attention, readers would be aware that F22 cluster flights have already occurred in direct opposition to this “new” GCI system. The Russians, Iranians and Syrians read about the overflights in the papers. To those who think this new advance Russian hardware is a significant factor or tips the balance of capabilities in favor to the Russians, you are sadly mistaken.
