Afghan forces counterattack after Kunduz falls to Taliban

Afghanistan’s Defense Ministry said that reinforcements arrived in Kunduz on Tuesday and had started to retake the strategic northern city that was overrun by the Taliban the previous day. Meanwhile, the US carried out an airstrike to support the counterattack. If the Taliban maintain their hold on Kunduz it could open the way for an attack on Kabul.  
DEBKAfile: During the US invasion of Afghanistan in 2001, after the 9/11 terrorist attacks in New York and Washington, it was actually Russian armored forces based in Uzbekistan that captured Kunduz from the Taliban. This cooperation against terror 14 years ago remains a secret between Washington and Moscow.
