Fugitive suspect arrested in Iraq in murder of Jewish schoolgirl

Ali Bashar, 20, was arrested by Kurdish security forces in northern Iraq Friday, at the request of Germany, on suspicion of the murder and rape of 14-year old Jewish schoolgirl Susanna Feldman in Mainz, Germany. The horrified Jewish community has demanded harsh consequences for the perpetrator. Bashar, an Iraqi asylum seeker, fled back to his homeland with members of his family after the crime. They were able to board a plane from Dusseldorf although the names on their identity documents did not match those on the tickets, German police admitted. Alli Bashar claimed asylum in Germany when he arrived with his parents and five siblings in 2015. It was refused but deportation was delayed by an appeal. He became known to the police for various violent incidents. Susanna Feldman’s murder revived criticism of Chancellor Angela Merkel’s immigration policy.
