Kenyatta: 61 civilians, 6 security officers killed in mall operation
President Uhuru Kenyatta refrained from announcing Tuesday night that the siege of the Westgate shopping mall under terrorist attack was over after four days of fighting. He said: ”Our task is completed, Kenya has shamed and defeated the attackers.” Five of the terrorists were killed and 11 in custody, he reported, announcing two days of national mourning. Experts will conduct forensic tests to establish the attackers' identities and nationalities, said Kenyatta. He cited intelligence reports on the involvement of one British woman and 2-3 Americans in the attack, but did not confirm this. President Kenyatta’s address was delayed for several hours, presumably because he hoped to be able to announce that what he called the “nightmare” was over. This seems not to be the case.
