New York Governor signs police reforms into law
New York State became the first to legislate sweeping police reforms in the wake of massive nationwide protest over the killing of George Floyd. Governor Andrew Cuomo signed into law on Friday a package of police accountability measures that ban chokeholds, make it possible to sue the police, expose their records and set up a special prosecutor’s office to investigate charges against the police. Some of the bills had been languishing for years until they were approved this week by the state’s legislature.
