Palestinian killed, 10 Israeli soldiers injured in Kalandia clash
One Palestinian was killed and 10 Israeli solders and Border Guards police were injured in the firefight that developed over the rescue of two Israeli soldiers who strayed Monday night into the Palestinian refugee camp of Kalandia north of Jerusalem. Their vehicle came under gunfire, explosive devices and a hail of rocks and iron bars. One of the officers jumped out and fled on foot to the nearby Kochav Yaakov; the second hid out until reinforcements arrived to rescue him, using crowd disposal measures and flares to cover their exit.
On Tuesday morning, Defense Minister Moshe Yaalon praised the quick response of the security forces that prevented the situation from getting any worse, He said the two soldiers were apparently unfamiliar with the area in which they were traveling because they were using the "Waze" navigation app. He added that the IDF would go back to using maps in such situations in the future.
