Russia tightens controls on Turkish farm and food imports

Following the Turkish downing of a Russian warplane, Moscow has retaliated with tighter controls on Turkish food and agricultural imports, citing violations of safety standards. Turkish food exports to Russia totaled just over $1 billion this year, of which 20 percent were vegetables. Turkey also accounts for a quarter of Russian citrus fruit imports. Moscow earlier hit Turkey’s tourist trade by advising holidaymakers to call off travel to Turkish resorts. Russian tourists to Turkey are second in volume only to German visitors, accounting for an estimated revenue of $4 billion a year.
