A pipe bomb explodes before US Marine charity event in New Jersey
The third US Marine charity 5k race to benefit US Marines and sailors was cancelled Saturday when a pipe bomb exploded in a garbage can in Seaside Park, New Jersey. No one was hurt. The site was cleared and placed in lockdown. Two more pipe bombs in the can failed to explode. Officials say runners had been scheduled to pass by the area around the time the blast occurred. But the start of the race had been delayed after an unattended backpack was found, and the area was mostly empty when the blast occurred.
Numerous state and federal law enforcement agencies are investigating.
