Is the Lapid-Bennet “government of change” in the bag?
Political sources confirmed on Saturday night that Yemina leader Naftali Bennett had finally decided to join opposition leader Yair Lapid in forming a new government, after vacillating between two camps. Under a deal for rotating the premiership, Bennett would take the lead. Their plan is to go public on Sunday night. The next day, Lapid will notify President Reuven Rivlin that he had fulfilled the task of forming a government. Barring last-minute holdups, the new government will be presented to the Knesset for a vote of approval before the end of the week. Likud and its leader PM Binyamin Netanyahu are still trying to put a spanner in the works by persuading some Yamina MKs to back away from supporting their leader’s step.
