Netanyahu: We shall guard our borders as we see fit

I told our friends in Washington and Moscow that Israel will act in Syria and southern Syria as it sees fit and in keeping with our security needs,” said Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu in response to criticism of the US-Russian deal for establishing a de-escalation zone just 7 km from the Israeli border. Speaking to a meeting of his Likud Knesset faction, Netanyahu added: “We guard our borders and our country and will continue to do so.”

DEBKAfile’s military sources: Until now, the prime minister has not ordered a military response to the presence of Iranian and Hizballah command centers in southern Syria in proximity to the Israel border. It is hardly likely that he will order such action now that the buffer zone is part of the Quneitra de-escalation zone established in the latest Trump-Putin accord, under Russian monitors. Given this very very low probability of a military response, I would advice the Iranian and Hizballah guys to mark the roofs of the command centers with a large quarter-moon in a contrasting color, or even better send email with the exact GPS coordinates to Zroa HaAvir VeHahalal and to Cheyl HaTothanim, such that there is no confussion where these centers are, for the purpose of preventing possible errors.
