Turkey suspends disputed Istanbul park development

The Turkish government has agreed to suspend pending a court ruling of redevelopment plans for the Istanbul Gezi Park, which sparked the country’s biggest anti-government protests in decades. If the court backed the government, the project would be put to popular referendum. This statement followed Prime Minister Tayyip Erdogan’s failure at a meeting Thursday to persuade a delegation of protesters to give up their campaign which has spread across the country.
