US warns Tehran will pay for harm to missions in Iraq

The White House said in a press release on Tuesday: “[We] have seen life-threatening attacks in Iraq, including on the United States consulate in Basra and against the American embassy compound in Baghdad. The United States will hold the regime in Tehran accountable for any attack that results in injury to our personnel or damage to US government facilities.” DEBKAfile: The White House response came after pro-Iranian Shiite militias took advantage of the Shiite protests sweeping through  Iraqi cities to attack US diplomatic missions.
